WOF & COF inspections in Penrose

Book a Warrant of Fitness at our Penrose workshop. Most weekdays you can wait in the lounge, and if something fails we can usually fix it the same day.

Quick answer

We carry out WOF and COF inspections at 575 Great South Road, Penrose, Monday to Friday, and most WOFs can be done while you wait. If your vehicle fails, we can usually do the repairs here and get you a pass the same day, and a re-check with us within 28 days has no re-inspection fee.

A Warrant of Fitness (WOF) is the regular safety inspection that New Zealand's light vehicles need to be legal on the road. It checks that your vehicle meets minimum safety standards on the day of the inspection. It is a pass-or-fail safety snapshot, not a mechanical health check, which is why a service is a separate job.

GVI Service Centre inspects every make, whether petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric. We also carry out Certificate of Fitness (COF) inspections. A COF replaces the WOF for vehicles such as heavy vehicles, buses, rental vehicles and some passenger-service vehicles; if you are not sure which one your vehicle needs, ask us or check with NZTA.

WOF rules change on 1 November 2026. NZTA has confirmed longer intervals for many newer vehicles, yearly instead of six-monthly checks for the oldest, and extra checks on driver-assistance warning indicators. Your current WOF expiry date stays the same. Read what the changes mean for your vehicle →

What is checked in a WOF

It is a general safety check, set out in NZTA's vehicle inspection requirements manual. In plain terms, the main areas are:

  • Tyres: condition and tread depth, with at least 1.5 mm in the main grooves and no cuts, bulges or exposed cords.
  • Brakes: how they operate, plus leaks and visible wear.
  • Steering and suspension: must be safe and secure, with no worn joints, bushes or leaking shock absorbers.
  • Lights: headlights, indicators, brake lights and the number plate light.
  • Glazing, wipers and washers: a safe windscreen, wipers that clear it and washers that spray.
  • Structure: structural condition, where rust is not allowed in certain areas.
  • Doors: they must open and close safely.
  • Seatbelts: not damaged or overly faded, with buckles that work properly.
  • Airbags, if fitted, and a speedometer that works.
  • Exhaust: no leaks, and not smoky or louder than the original system.
  • Fuel system: no leaks.

NZTA has confirmed that from 1 November 2026 inspections also check the warning indicators for driver-assistance systems such as lane keep and automatic emergency braking, and a malfunctioning system must be fixed to get a WOF.

What a WOF does not check

A WOF is not a pre-purchase inspection or a service. NZTA lists what it does not cover, including the condition of the engine, clutch, gearbox and differential, lubricant levels and condition, brake pad thickness or life expectancy (unless visibly below safe limits), and paintwork and some non-structural rust. That is why a service and a pre-purchase inspection are separate jobs.

What happens if your vehicle fails

  1. We tell you exactly what failed and why. No jargon, and you can ask us to show you.
  2. We quote the repair before we touch it. You choose between genuine and quality aftermarket parts.
  3. We fix it here where we can. Many failures, such as bulbs, wipers, brake work and tyres, can be done the same day. A courtesy car is available if the repair takes longer, subject to availability.
  4. You get your re-check. Come back to us within 28 days and there is no re-inspection fee. Until it is repaired, the vehicle can only be driven to get it fixed or re-inspected, and only if it is safe to do so.

How to pass first time

A quick look before you arrive catches most of the common failures:

  • Walk around the car with the lights on: headlights, brake lights, indicators and number plate light.
  • Check the wipers clear the screen and the washers spray, and look for chips in the driver's line of sight.
  • Look at your tyres: tread depth, pressure and any damage on the sidewalls.
  • Note any dashboard warning lights, especially airbag lights, because a fault in a safety system can stop a pass.
  • Tell us about any noises, pulling or vibrations when you book, so we can look at them properly.

Our guide to why cars fail a WOF goes through the common reasons in more detail.

WOF for electric and hybrid vehicles

The WOF checklist is the same for EVs and hybrids. In practice the item we see most is brake corrosion: regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so the friction brakes can rust and stick from lack of use. If your EV or hybrid is due a WOF, a brake service first can save a failed inspection. Our EV and hybrid servicing page has more.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a WOF take?

A standard inspection is quick enough that most customers wait on site in our lounge, which has coffee and wifi. If your vehicle needs repairs, we will give you a time frame once the inspection is done, and a courtesy car is available, subject to availability.

Do I need to book a WOF?

Booking is the best way to make sure a hoist is ready when you arrive. If it is urgent, call 09 579 6083 or text 021 184 7876 and we will see what we can fit in.

How much does a WOF cost?

Call us on 09 579 6083 for the current price. If the inspection finds anything that needs fixing, we quote the repair before any work starts.

Is there a fee if I come back after a fail?

No re-inspection fee applies if you return to the same inspection provider within 28 days of the failed inspection. After 28 days a new inspection and fee are needed.

What is the difference between a WOF and a COF?

Both are safety inspections. A WOF applies to most light vehicles. A COF applies to vehicles such as heavy vehicles, buses, rental vehicles and some passenger-service vehicles. If you are unsure which applies to yours, ask us when you book.

Is a WOF the same as a service?

No. A WOF is a pass-or-fail safety check on the day. A service is maintenance: fluids, filters and adjustments that keep the vehicle reliable. Many customers book both on the same visit.

Can I drive a vehicle that has failed its WOF?

NZTA says you cannot drive it on the road unless you are taking it somewhere to be repaired or to get a new WOF, and only if it is safe to do so.

What if my WOF has already expired?

Book as soon as you can. Driving on an expired WOF can result in an infringement fee, and the Government has announced higher fees from 1 November 2026. Call us and we will find the earliest time.

Really happy with the service here. Luan was super helpful and even managed to get my WOF checked earlier than expected. Even though my car didn’t pass the first time, when I came back with everything fixed they checked it again really quickly, which I really appreciated. Everything was smooth and easy, and I’m so glad it’s close to home, I’ll definitely keep coming back here for future services.
