Auto electrical and diagnostics in Penrose

Warning lights, intermittent faults, flat batteries and charging problems, diagnosed properly with the right tools, not just a code read and a guess.

Quick answer

A dashboard warning light means a system has logged a fault, not that you know what is wrong. GVI Service Centre in Penrose scans every make and model, then tests to find the real cause, whether that is a sensor, wiring, battery, alternator or an EV system, and quotes the repair before we start.

Modern vehicles run on dozens of computers, sensors and kilometres of wiring. When something goes wrong, the car stores a fault code, and a warning light tells you it has. What the light does not tell you is why. We scan engine and system faults on all makes and models, and then do the testing that turns a code into a cause.

Why a code read is not a diagnosis

A fault code points to a circuit or a system, not to a part. A code for an oxygen sensor can be caused by the sensor, its wiring, an exhaust leak or an engine problem. Replacing the part named by the code is how people spend money and still have the light come back. We use the code as the starting point, then test the circuit, the wiring and the component to find what has actually failed.

What we diagnose and repair

  • Warning lights: engine, ABS, airbag (SRS), traction control, power steering and EV system lights.
  • Starting and charging problems: batteries, starters and alternators, tested before they are replaced.
  • Intermittent faults that come and go, which need patient testing rather than a quick scan.
  • Wiring, lighting and accessory faults, from failed indicators to central locking and windows.
  • Sensor and engine management faults causing rough running, poor economy or limp mode.
  • Check-light resets, once the cause has been fixed, not instead of fixing it.

Batteries: the quiet cause of a lot of faults

A weak 12V battery makes electronics behave strangely: warning lights that come on at random, windows that slow down, a car that will not start on cold mornings. We test the battery and the charging system first, because a lot of electrical gremlins start there. This applies to electric vehicles as well, where a flat or failing 12V battery is one of the most common reasons an EV will not wake up.

EV and hybrid systems

Electric and hybrid vehicles add high-voltage systems with their own diagnostics. We read EV system faults, test the 12V and high-voltage batteries, report on battery health with our AVILOO battery test, and apply firmware updates where they are available. More on our EV and hybrid servicing page.

How it works

  1. You tell us what is happening, which lights are on, and when it occurs: cold start, going uphill, in the wet.
  2. We scan the vehicle and record the fault codes.
  3. We test to find the real cause, and explain what we found in plain language.
  4. We quote the repair before any work starts, with genuine or quality aftermarket parts, your choice.

Frequently asked questions

Will you just reset the warning light?

We can clear a light, but only after the cause has been found and fixed. Clearing a light on its own just hides a fault that will come back, and it can also hide the problem from the next WOF inspection.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

A steady amber light means get it checked soon. A flashing light, or a red warning light, means stop driving as soon as it is safe, because there may be a serious fault that can damage the engine or affect safety. Our guide on what warning lights mean covers the common ones.

Why does my car keep going flat overnight?

Common causes are an old battery, a faulty alternator, or something drawing power when the car is off, such as a stuck relay or a faulty module. We test the battery and charging system first, then look for parasitic drain if the battery is healthy.

Can you diagnose electric vehicle faults?

Yes. We have worked on electric vehicles for over ten years, and we diagnose EV system faults, test 12V and high-voltage batteries and apply firmware updates where they are available.

How long does diagnosis take?

It depends on the fault. A clear-cut problem can be identified quickly; an intermittent one takes longer because we need to catch it happening. We will give you an idea of time and cost before we go deep, and a courtesy car is available subject to availability.

Great service! Efficient and diagnosed the problem quickly, had the new battery in stock so fast turnaround. Particularly appreciated the mechanic/ technician providing technical details. I would recommend this service provider.
