Cam belt, timing chain and engine work in Penrose

Cam belts replaced on schedule with the water pump, stretched timing chains replaced, oil leaks and overheating diagnosed, transmissions serviced, and engines repaired or rebuilt when it comes to that.

Quick answer

A cam (timing) belt is a rubber belt that keeps an engine's valves and pistons in time, and it must be replaced at the interval your manufacturer sets, usually by distance or age. If it breaks, many engines suffer severe damage. GVI Service Centre in Penrose replaces cam belts with the water pump done at the same time, replaces stretched timing chains, repairs and rebuilds engines and services transmissions.

Engine work is where an honest quote matters most. We diagnose the fault first, tell you what it needs and what it will cost, and where a repair does not make sense we say so. We work on petrol and diesel engines of every make, and our team also handles transmission servicing.

Cam belts: the job you do not want to skip

In many engines a rubber timing belt, usually called the cam belt, drives the camshafts in time with the crankshaft so the valves open and close at the right moment. Rubber ages, so makers set a replacement interval by distance, by age, or both. The belt usually gives little warning before it fails, and on many engines a snapped belt lets valves and pistons collide, which can mean a rebuild or a replacement engine.

Replacing a belt on schedule is far cheaper than repairing what happens when it breaks. We replace the water pump at the same time as the cam belt. The pump is driven by or sits beside the belt, so the same labour gets us to both, and a pump that fails later could take a new belt and the engine with it. Tensioners and idler pulleys are commonly done in the same job too, so you do not pay for the same labour twice.

  • Follow the schedule, not the look of the belt. A belt can look fine and still be past its life.
  • If you do not know when it was last done, treat it as due. That is especially true for a used or imported car with no service history.
  • Belt or chain? Some engines use a timing chain instead of a belt. Chains are not on a fixed schedule, but they can stretch (see below). Give us your rego and we will tell you which yours has.

Stretched timing chains

A timing chain does the same job as a cam belt, but it runs inside the engine on engine oil. It is built to last far longer than a belt, yet chains do wear and stretch, especially on engines that have gone a long time between oil changes. As a chain stretches, the timing drifts, and the guides and tensioner that keep it tight wear with it.

  • A rattle on a cold start that fades as the engine warms up.
  • Rough running, hesitation or a loss of power.
  • A check engine light with camshaft and crankshaft timing fault codes.

We diagnose the fault first, so you are not replacing a chain for a problem it did not cause. If the chain has stretched, we replace it, normally as a set with the guides, tensioner and sprockets that wear alongside it, then check the timing and clear the fault codes. Leaving a stretched chain too long risks it jumping a tooth or breaking, and on many engines that damages the valves and pistons.

Engine repairs and rebuilds

  • Oil leaks from gaskets, seals and sumps, found and fixed rather than topped up.
  • Overheating and cooling systems: radiators, thermostats, water pumps and hoses, with the pump replaced alongside the cam belt.
  • Head gaskets and related repairs, once the diagnosis confirms them.
  • Rough running, misfires and poor economy, diagnosed with proper testing. See auto electrical and diagnostics.
  • Engine rebuilds when the engine is worth saving, with the numbers laid out so you can decide between a rebuild and other options.

Transmission servicing

Automatic and CVT transmissions depend on clean fluid of the right specification. We carry out transmission servicing to your manufacturer's schedule, and diagnose slipping, shuddering, flaring or harsh shifting. Dirty or neglected fluid is a common cause of transmission trouble, and a fluid service is far cheaper than a replacement unit.

How it works

  1. We identify what you have: engine, belt or chain, and when it was last done.
  2. We inspect and diagnose, and explain the findings plainly.
  3. We quote the job with genuine or quality aftermarket parts, your choice, before any work starts.
  4. We do the work, test it and return the car, with a courtesy car available in the meantime, subject to availability.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a cam belt be replaced?

It depends entirely on the engine. Manufacturers set intervals by distance, by age or both, and they vary widely between models. Give us your rego and we will check what your vehicle needs.

What happens if a cam belt breaks?

The engine stops immediately. On many engines, called interference engines, the pistons and valves then collide, which can cause severe damage that costs far more than the belt service would have.

How do I know whether my car has a belt or a chain?

Your handbook will say, or give us the make, model, year and rego and we will check. Chains are not on a fixed replacement schedule, but they can still wear and stretch, and we replace stretched timing chains.

Do you replace the water pump when you do the cam belt?

Yes. We replace the water pump at the same time as the cam belt. The labour overlaps, so doing it together costs far less than paying for the job twice, and it removes the risk of an old pump failing later and damaging a new belt.

What are the signs of a stretched timing chain?

The classic sign is a rattle for a few seconds on a cold start. Other signs are rough running, hesitation, a loss of power and a check engine light with camshaft and crankshaft timing codes. Have it diagnosed promptly, because a chain that jumps a tooth or breaks can damage the engine.

Can you replace a stretched timing chain?

Yes. We diagnose first, then replace the chain, normally with the guides, tensioner and sprockets, check the timing and clear the fault codes. We quote before any work starts.

Should I rebuild or replace a worn engine?

It depends on the engine, the rest of the vehicle and the cost. We diagnose first, then lay out the options and numbers so you can make the call. Sometimes a repair is better value, and sometimes it is not worth doing.

Does a CVT need servicing?

Yes. CVT and automatic fluids degrade with use and heat, and many manufacturers specify a fluid service at set intervals. We service transmissions to your manufacturer's schedule.

Great experience. Good responsiveness and clarity from the start of my journey. Helped me find the right approach for fixing a water pump issue on my Nissan Leaf. Good communication and very reliable. Provided a loan car and communicated in timeous manner throughout.
